Entry #4 Speech acts.

Summary of contents:

The linguistic J. L. Autin developed the idea of a difference between a statement that describes and the one that recommends, that is why he makes a distinction between two separate parts in a speech named constative and performative. Constative are sentences that describe if something is true or false and performative are words or sentences that denote an action.

When words are actions in themselves it is called a speech act, these actions include but not limited to ordering, promising, apologising,  warning, sentencing, christening, marrying, etc.
Constative can be true or false and try to convey a message, while performative depends on context and reception. If both things are understood it is called felicity conditions and this should be: authoritative, understood, clear, and able to be executed. Even if the performative has its conditions and is clearly stated it does not mean that it is going to be followed, that is why there should be a consequence of breaking it.

Metacognitive Analysis
Nowadays using videos as a resource to learn any topic is very useful. There are students with visual learning style who remember what they see rather than what they hear. As teachers, we can use images, maps, graphs, and other visual representations, but in my opinion, the video is the best tool to use because students are acquainted with them.

In the case of this video, images are accompanied by clear messages, phrases, and information. It is really important to understand the content because we can cause student engagement in the video but not the learning on the topic. This is why we have to make a search before choosing the most appropriate video. We can find several ones related to the topic we want to deal with in the lesson but not all of them will help us to have a good result.

Metacognitive analysis

As teachers, we have to be responsible for the information we use in our work, that is why it is really important to know how to cite sources, not only because of the responsibility to credit our research but to avoid plagiarism in words and ideas used by other authors.

entry #2: Writing Advice

Metacognitive analysis

First of all, I would like to share my own experience in creating a slideshow. I have started dealing with this some months ago when as a result of the pandemic I had to meet my students through the use of video communication called zoom. At the very beginning, I just shared the screen with some window file to work with them, but then I realized it was boring for me, that is why I  started searching for any technological tool which could help me to make my virtual lesson more dynamic, interesting and joyful. I think it was very useful because I can see my students participating and taking an active part to expose their knowledge, opinion, etc.
Second, to be able to do this slideshow, I used PowerPoint but as my notebook templates are really basic I download some new ones to do it. I used a web page named slides carnival.
Third, I think it is really important to use ICT tools in our classrooms because we can approximate the contents to our students in a way that they can enjoy it and expose their learning as best as possible. Furthermore, we should be prepared to learn how to deal with and use these tools which are indispensable in this century.

Entry #1 Alanis Morissette - Ironic (Official Video)

IRONIC  by Alanis Morissette

Hey, I, I
Yeah, ah, ah
Yeah, I
An old man turned ninety-eight
He won the lottery and died the next day
It's a black fly in your Chardonnay
It's a death row pardon two minutes too late
And isn't it ironic, don't you think?
It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
And who would've thought? It figures
Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down, he thought

"Well, isn't this nice"
And isn't it ironic, don't you think?
It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
And who would've

In order to write my introduction I have chosen the song Ironic by Alanis Morissette. This song represents many times in my life, some of them happy and enjoyable and other harder or more difficult.
Firstly, in the last ten years I have lived situations in which the humor and to take the things in a funny way helped me a lot. I have a son called Mariano who was diagnosed with T.E.L when he was three years old, since that moment some situations were ironic like the song's name. For example, one of his therapists, who helps him a lot, is mum of a girl who was my student when I didn't even dreamt to be a mother.
Secondly, when I listen to the song I can remember my youth. I was an adolescent when this song was very popular on the radio.Music can be a time magine. I can remember listening to this while I was hanging out with one of my best friends who is my son's godmother today.
Thirdly, the title of this song represents me with my personality. I use the irony most of the time but is one of the things that I have to avoid to use with my son who does not understand it because of his pathology.
Furthermore, the video shows the singer inside a car, she is alone, but representing different personalities. I share that feeling or being different personalities in one, I mean, all of us are not the same person in different kind of situations.
Finally, I would like to highlight one of its lines which makes me think positive that is " life has a funny way of helping you out".
Life is uncertain and leads us down paths that can be hard but the way in which we face it will make the difference.
